This means that uniquely brutal & awful things will occur in each of our lives and we must learn, grow and transcend each "shitty" episode in order to become wiser and more fully developed. I think Housman and Mayer are telling us that we need to go through the sobering times & the dark, dreary painful poopy experiences in order to rise up and soak in the happier times.
